I thought this "craft beer ipa neckbeard" thing was just a meme, but apparently there is this guy on Youtube called "Craft Computing" whose entire personality is craft beer and talking about proprietary computer stuff?

Is this not an act?

Only know about this because someone (I forgot who) posted about this Youtuber doing a "Linux challenge".

It's exactly what you expect from all of these types of videos.
* Complaining about Nvidia not working as it should.
* Complaining about proprietary software not working as it should.
* Complaining about software downloaded from websites instead of from the distro repository not working as it should.
* Complaining about window management when you can just install a different window manager.
* Complaining about "muh Photoshop".

What's even the point of these videos? You clearly don't care about software freedom, you just wanted a new toy to play with.

It's also not targeted at distro maintainers because all of these issues are not solvable by distros themselves, you clearly created these issues yourself.

I can only conclude that these videos are specifically made just to piss off people like me. Why else would you make this?

"Linux challenge" videos are just ragebait for actual GNU/Linux users.

@SuperDicq Photoshop barely even works on w*ndows these days tbh

@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo some folks only have a few interests. 🤷

@purple@nya.social I like craft beer too, but it's not my entire personality.

@purple@nya.social Actually I didn't drink alcohol since I started getting epileptic attacks from it since about 6 years.

@purple@nya.social There's some 0% beers that I like tho.

@purple
I think this is what it comes down to. They like consuming their interests to the point that's all their personality is. Seen it a lot IRL too, nothing wrong with it per say but can be irking when I try to get to know someone and don't find much there.

@SuperDicq I haven't used Linux as a daily driver for a while now so maybe I'm full of it, but I thought NVIDIA support was supposed to be pretty good. Well, at least in the 'buntu derivatives. Heck, I thought it had even gotten better in Arch.

So when I see recent complaints about NVIDIA on Linux, I get confused. Did it recently get worse, or is it a case of "same complaint, different day"?

I've had a dwindling opinion of Linux since 2015 but I thought gaming had improved with Proton.

@SuperDicq Ran out of characters, I shouldn't discount that this could be a complaint about binary blob drivers not being open source and nouveau still sucking, but I doubt the guys making YouTube videos about how much Linux sucks for the algorithm make that distinction.

@Beepner@mastodon.world Nvidia has technically speaking indeed improved by making some parts of their proprietary driver free software. This means that developers are not completely powerless anymore and can actually patch issues if the issue happens to be in one of the parts that is free.

However we're still completely at the mercy of Nvidia willingness to fix stuff when it comes to most parts of the driver and especially the firmware.

If there's an issue with a proprietary piece of software, nobody can fix it. In this specific case being that Nvidia has not yet (fully?) implemented AV1 encoder APIs on their drivers.

@Beepner@mastodon.world There is also no difference between Nvidia support between various different GNU/Linux distributions like Ubuntu or Arch.

Just the process of installation and the version they ship might be different.

@SuperDicq He also did some self-hosting and homelab videos many years ago.

@phnt@fluffytail.org That sounds like actual helpful information unlike this video that I just watched.

@SuperDicq I remember watching videos like this just for fun in the background before I got into Linux server stuff.

I assume you watched the new switching to Linux video. Basically all of these types videos are just clickbait and can be summarized by this: "I don't like it, because it doesn't function the same as the current thing I'm using."

@phnt@fluffytail.org Seeing all these people react is even more cringe than the original video itself.

@SuperDicq >by making some parts of their proprietary driver free software
They didn't really.

They released some shim code under a pushover license to help justify infringing the GPLv2 and although everyone can actually fix bugs in that shim code, it doesn't do much, so the fixes required won't be much.
