Are System76 #Linux laptops any good?
@nyrath (Pop!_OS probably not for me...? I saw ubuntu and flatpak and thought "oh no!". Plain old debian man me)
Well, I was interested in Pop!_OS not for its Linux features.
But because it integrated all the drivers needed for the hardware.
@nyrath FWIW on my last debian laptop install the driver issues I ran into were almost disappointingly few, compared to the contortions I've gone through in the past.
I would expect a laptop like the system76 ones to be all mainstream linux supported devices...?
@nyrath Here it is https://steinar.bang.priv.no/2022/07/31/installing-debian-11-bullseye-using-pxe-boot-on-an-acer-aspire-5-a515-45-laptop/
Installed with debian 11 in 2022, currently running debian 12.5 (no reinstall, just "apt full-upgrade"), current uptime 33 days 18:06h (I only reboot on kernel updates and/or libc updates).
Bluetooth, wifi, display, sound, touchpad, keyboard all working flawlessly.
@steinarb @nyrath Anyone try this on a Framework PC? If my 2015 MacBook Pro dies, Apple told me it will be "legacy" machine with limited availability of parts to fix it. I've already replaced the battery twice. My next machine will run a wonderful distro called Zorin based on Ubuntu actively being developed in Ireland.
I have my eye on the Framework. Anyone have one? How is it?
@mvilain @steinarb@mastodon.social @nyrath I've had a System 76 laptop and currently use one of their Meerkat mini-PCs, both with Ubuntu and the driver support is excellent. I've also heard good things about Framework. @joevgreathead bought one not too long ago and seemed very positive about it.
