Student using handheld 'hacking device' wreaks havoc at Utah high school
So I listened to this and basically the kid used the IR to replay power commands for digital whiteboards.
I did the exact same thing in high school in 1993 with...a programmable TV remote. It is fascinating to think that I could have made news for a silly prank.

@sun Wait until they hear about Xiaomi phones with IR transmitter.
@mint High end HP scientific calculators had IR remote on them too when I was in school.
@sun lg phones were the tits for a while because they still had an ir blaster up until recently, the magic tricks you could do
@sun I remember before those phones became widespread, people used to access service menus on TVs by soldering a transmitter to a headphone jack and playing back the WAV recording of needed command.

I just found out the kid was CHARGED WITH A CLASS B MISDEMEANOR
re: Student using handheld 'hacking device' wreaks havoc at Utah high school
@sun@shitposter.world we did this in school with android devices with IR blasters smh

@0 two claims:
he "traumatized" a teacher by turning on and off devices when she tried to use them
an administrator's cell phone was "permanently damaged", I don't believe this for a second.

@sun
Holy shit, this alarmism about a fucking gimmick toy is retarded. I hate technically illiterate retards.

@0 This freakout is a combination of authoritarian impulse of both Utah citizens and school systems
re: Student using handheld 'hacking device' wreaks havoc at Utah high school
@sun I was on the verge of being reported under the Computer Misuse Act for writing a Batch script that made use of the Messenger service on Windows XP. The service is disabled by default, ergo not unauthorised entry to any system. My punishment was remotely controlled computer access, and I still ended up banned while doing work relevant to the lesson (Web graphics).
@0 @dictatordave Speaking as someone who already owned individual components to do what the Flipper does, the Flipper combines them all into one tiny device that does them all better through a phone app
@dictatordave @0 they're hugely overreacting to this
@sun @dictatordave And doesn't even have wifi by default. They couldn't even sprint for an internal esp32, it's overpriced trash.
@0 @dictatordave I got the wifi board for it but it looks like it can't do a lot without being tethered to a PC. At which point, you could have just used...the pc.
re: Student using handheld 'hacking device' wreaks havoc at Utah high school
@dictatordave @0 I just heard that, allegedly, the reason the teacher was so traumatized was that she thought that "evil spirits" were responsible for the trickery and had to take multiple days off work. Mormon country, everybody
@c yes, it is likely edited because a stock Flipper has a monochrome orange screen. There are mods to add a color screen to it though
@0 @dictatordave I have one of those too
re: Student using handheld 'hacking device' wreaks havoc at Utah high school
@sun we put a remote usb mouse mini plug in teachers laptop once. whenever he used the mouse we did too

@sun wait till they find out you could do that IR shit with a PSP-1000 (and I did in high school). Like this is not new not that complicated. Though I guess I am just echoing the sentiment of this whole thread at this point.

@sun Sounds like a slow news day.
